Las Vegas Part #1

Wednesday, December 4

We picked up a rental car for a few days so we could manage better and safely leave Scout.

We decided to check out the Fremont Experience first which is located in Downtown Las Vegas, the they offer free nightly shows featuring 12.5 million lights and 550,000 watts of amazing sound and free concerts and special events throughout the year. I wasn't very impressed, but it was a cold night so it didn't seem too animated.  Lots of "characters" about posing for photos for small tip.  This guy cracks us up!

Viva Las Vegas! My parents said we would see things we won’t be able to get out of our heads. They got that right. That’s why I’m not going to tell you every bit of what I saw.

We had been having pizza withdrawals all month! We found some really good pizza at Rock Pizza.  Tyler had seen a homeless veteran and decided he wanted to give him his leftover pizza that we had boxed up. The man was grateful and took it gladly. I was surprised at how emotional I got. He could have been someone's grandfather. Back in the car Tyler got emotional too...once it hit him.

Our kids have had very sheltered lives. This is something he won't soon forget.  He has a heart of gold and it's nice to see him have empathy for complete strangers. He said that so many people passed him by tonight...random acts of kindness, one person at a time. I think the Hadwens have a theme for December.

Thursday, December 5

Looking for a more family oriented Las Vegas experience, we started the day at the Mirage at Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. We were able to casually enjoy white lions, white tigers, panthers, leopards and the  family of bottlenose dolphins, right up front and personal.

After the Mirage, we crossed the street and went over the the Venetian.

On the Grand Canal they have authentic Venetian gondola rides. You can float beneath bridges, beside cafes, under balconies and through the vibrant Venetian streetscape as your singing gondolier sweeps you down the Grand Canal for a ride like no other.

We chose to dine in St Marks Square, traditionally the center of Italian social life, the piazza offers guests a gathering place to enjoy la bella vita or the beautiful life. Ideally situated on the Venetian’s Piazza San Marco, Otto Enoteca Pizzeria is the a Mario Batali restaurant.

Our final destination for the day was the Stratosphere for the sunset.  My friend Keri told me this was the place for a sunset and she was right!  109 Floors and 800 ft over Las Vegas.  There are 3 crazy rides n top of the Stratosphere.  Jack and I went on the one called "Insanity"  The good part was that we had no idea what we were in for.  We had not seen the ride in action before our ride, no time to be nervous or back out.  "Insanity" is the second highest thrill ride in the world; it dangles riders over the edge of the tower and then spins in a circular pattern at approximately forty miles per hour.

We spent some time up on the Observation Deck waiting for the sunset.

Scott has a friend, Lisa Roe, here on business who he had not seen since college...1987! It was nice that they were able to have a mini-reunion and it was great to meet her and her friends.  Funny how they had to meet in Las Vegas when we only live an hour or so away from each other :)

Anyway, nice ending to a fun day exploring Las Vegas....did I mention that I LOVE this place! I am definitely coming back!

I think we are going to brave the cold and go for an outdoor swim today before heading back to the strip to check out Paris and the Bellagio.
