Driving into the sunset...

November 6, 2013

Most people think about an RV trip they plan for months, even years. We decided to do this RV thing and hit the road all within a month! Some of you may be curious as to why now? In a nutshell, Scott was told this summer that his job, along with his co-workers, were being “out-sourced” to India. He really liked his job, the friends he met there and the short 11 mile commute.

The thought of having some free time without the ties to a job got my thoughts racing. Knowing that this moment probably would not present itself again, I just threw it out there…”Honey, lets buy an RV and hit the road.” I sent him a link to an RV and he said “buy it”. The timing could not be better. The boys are in 4th and 5th grade…still at a level that we can home school them because I’m not so sure that I am smarter than a 5th grader! I really hope this experience is a major life event that shapes their future love of travel and sparks their curiosity of things around them.

We packed up all day long and finally were ready to hit the road at about 4:30pm. Not the ideal time to depart but no use spending another night at home. I don’t even think we drove a 100 miles and it was pushing 8pm. Rumor has it there was a 15 mile backup on I-90 and I believe it because we sat in it! We pulled into a rest area, had some leftover pasta and the kids watched Sanford & Sons on TV which brings me to…

The first night, tossing and turning in bed, I hear this grunting, snorting pig-like jalopy of a truck drive by or at least this is how I imagine it. It takes everything in me to not just bust a gut laughing. I look at my watch and it’s 11:30pm. It’s going to be a long night...

We aren’t exactly sure where this journey will take us…it doesn’t even matter. We will go for as long as we can, see and appreciate everything in front of us and bring home some great memories and stories.  I can already tell this is going to be one heck of a trip. Truth is stranger than fiction and some stuff you just can’t make up!
