Homosassa Springs, FL

Feb 27 - March 1st

Wow...I can't believe it is March 1st...day #116!

The Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is often home to large numbers of 'migratory' manatees, which frequent the area due to its springs and relatively warm waters. The park is home to Lu, a famous hippopotamus known for his performances in many movies for the past 40 years. The park also hosts an underwater viewing platform, known as the "fish bowl", where visitors can see manatees and fish swimming in the large spring from which the Homosassa River begins. The park showcases native Florida wildlife, including manatees, black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, American alligators, American crocodiles, and river otters.

It was difficult to watch this masculine bald eagle try to fly with 1 full wing.
Crested Caracara...looks like a bad toupee...

For the weekend, we went to a woodsy part of Florida.  Behind us was a stream, which birds ate fish from.  I liked when the fish actually jumped out of the water.  All we really did that day was hang out, but the next day-we saw manatees.  We biked over to a wildlife place.  The manatees were awesome!  My favorite part was their tails because they were just flat and round.  We also saw a bunch of birds.  They flew around everywhere!  There were herons, flamingos, ibises, pelicans and some I can’t name.  There were owls too, the barn owl, the great horned owl, and the barred owl.  There was so much to see!  When we were done, my Dad biked to the grocery store, and my Mom, Tyler and I peddled on down to a pizza place.  It was good pizza.  Then we went back and hung out.

I'm getting antsy to move on.  We are headed a bit more south tomorrow for a couple of days before we begin our more northerly trek towards home.
